Barr comes over from AdAge where he was covering the media business, but now he’ll add politics to his duties
The Hollywood Reporter announced a couple new hires today, including one to report on the intersection of politics and the media.
Peter Kiefer (left), who has been a contributor to THR, will now serve as Real Estate and City Editor based in Los Angeles. Jeremy Barr (right), who for the past year has been at AdAge covering media, will serve as Media and Politics Writer based in New York.
That last position will be interesting to watch. Last summer TNM soft launched a second website which covered the intersection of politics and the media, but found that despite a lot of news in this regard, there seemed to be very little interest by media people in seeing how their industry overall was covering the election, and what was influencing the public.
But things have changed with the election of DJT. Now everyone wants to know how did this happen, what was the role of the Russian, hackers, and paid trolls? Now, the public, and the media itself, sees through some of the reporting, the presence of odd sounding outlets in the White House briefing room. Now, no one thinks it is funny when someone promotes a conspiracy theory, because they see that people in power are picking up that news and spreading it themselves.
So, it will be interesting to see what Barr comes up with and how he approaches his new job. He has a lot more going for him at THR than what TNM’s second site had on its side — for one thing, I’m sure THR is in a better position to fight off the DDoS attacks than TNM was last year.
Barr will also, I would imagine, cover the topic as much from a B2C perspective as from a B2B perspective. But we’ll see soon enough.
Here is The Hollywood Reporter’s announcement for its two new hires:
